New Patient Q&A

What is involved in a cleaning?

In a routine dental cleaning, our hygienists use ultrasonic technology and hand instruments to remove plaque and tartar on your teeth at and above the gum line. To finish, they polish your teeth to make them nice and smooth and give your smile a bright, beautiful shine. Sensitive? We can apply gel on your gums to make your experience even more comfortable.

What if I haven’t had my teeth cleaned in a long time?

Don’t feel bad! It’s very common for people to put off visiting the dentist, sometimes for many years. And what’s worse, the longer they go without a cleaning, the more embarrassing they find it to make an appointment, so they put it off even longer. Park Slope Dentistry Seventh Avenue is a “no judgement” office because we understand how scary it can be for some people to visit the dentist, especially after a long time away. What’s most important now is not the cleanings you missed, but that you take an active role in the future of your teeth. Whether it’s been six months or six years (or more), we are here to help you take control of your oral health.

What does the dental exam include?

A comprehensive dental exam will check the health of your gums, the strength of your tooth structure and look for issues related to teeth grinding. It also includes an oral cancer screening, and of course x-rays to make sure there aren’t any problems like decay of your teeth.

How long does a new patient exam last?

You can expect your new patient exam to last about an hour and twenty minutes.

Why are X-rays necessary?

A decaying tooth often gives no signs of a problem until it gets so bad that it causes you serious pain or even tooth loss. Regular checkup X-rays allow us to discover problems in teeth now, before they become big painful problems later.  Would you rather have a small filling now or a root canal later?

Is the radiation from dental X-rays safe?

Modern, digital dental x-rays have extremely low levels of radiation. You’re actually exposed to more radiation on a 2 hour commercial airplane flight than you are from digital dental x-rays (yes, flying in the air exposes you to radiation, but the levels are so low that they’re also not dangerous). The technician taking your x-rays leaves the room because they could be seeing over 10 patients in one day, and over many years that level of exposure can add up. But as a patient, you’re only getting x-rays every once in awhile, so the levels are so low you don’t need to worry at all.
